After the 1994 tribal war that led to massive killing of people, several places were put in place to commemorate this dangerous genocide. About one million people died and it is believed that this saga lasted for 100 days.
Rwanda now has eight genocide sites that showcase the remains and pictures which indicate some of the scenarios that happened. Highlighted below, these historic spots dot different regions of the country.
Murambi Genocide Memorial site:
After the genocide, this place was deserted and the natives settled in other areas. It is believed that about 2700 individuals were slaughtered at this school. Several corpses up to date are being preserved here. No one is permitted to distract these sites.
Due to the fast developing tourism industry in Rwanda, this school is refurbished and work as an exhibition. Visitors to this place get free information regarding the intriguing history of the country.
Besides the exhibits of corpses, there are also preserved burial-rooms that feed tourists with clear views. Survivors guide the visitors around while narrating their disheartening experiences.
Gisozi Memorial site
Located in Gasabo district close to Kigali city, Gisozi Memorial site is recognized to be where most of the Tutsi victims were slaughtered by the Hutus. In 2000 the victims from both tribes were buried in this same area. This place turned into a tourism center in 2004. It features a display house, a cemetery, photo gallery and a library.
Gisenyi Memorial site
This is located in Gisenyi. It keeps about 12000 remains of victims killed in the 1994 genocide. It is the first memorial site to be established through the help of Ibuka. Bodies buried here were collected from Nyundo and the area of Corniche.
Nyamata memorial site
Situated in Bugesera district, Nyamata memorial site was a church before the genocide. Most of the people who were killed from here had gone there to seek refuge. It is approximately 35km from Kigali city.
Bisesero Memorial site
This site is found in Karongi district just on the lower slope of Kibuye region, western Rwanda. Over 30000 people were killed in this region. This was the place of the Tutsis as they organized to stand up against the Massacre although most of them were murdered by the Hutus due to their weak weapons.
Nyarubuye Memorial Site
Recognized as a convent, this place is home to over 20000 people who were man slaughtered from here. Most of them were Tutsis who attempted to escape to Tanzania. All the remains are reserved inside for memorial.
Nyanza Memorial Site
This was a school in Nyanza governed by the UN. It housed many UN officials who had come to provide security to the locals before the genocide. When the War started, these officials returned to their home countries. Most of the people who had come in for refuge were killed.
Ntarama Memorial site
Ntarama memorial site is 30 kilometers from Kigali city and it requires about one hour to drive up to there. About 5000 people who had gone to seek refuge were murdered within the church. Most of them were women and children. Since the genocide, this place is not tempered with and is used as a display site.
