Mgahinga Gorilla National Park - Memories Africa Safaris

Located in the South western part of Uganda – Kisoro district, Mgahinga National Park is one of the reasons why tourists include Uganda on their bucket list for Africa. It’s about 15 km south of Kisoro town and 55 km west of Kabale.

It was gazzeted in 1991 with an aim to provide habitat and preserve Wildlife including the Mountain Gorillas.

Mgahinga is home to the three volcanic mountains of the Virunga massif. These volcanoes include mount Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. There are part of the eight volcanoes found in Virunga.

Mgahinga National Park, Virunga and Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda combine to form the Virunga conservation area, a section which covers a total area of 434 square kilometers. Mgahinga covers eight percent of the total area.

Its total area of 33.9 square kilometers is occupied by the tropical rainforests, bamboo forests, and Afromontane forests of the Albertine Rift Eco region.

It experiences two rainy seasons including February to May and September to December. The average monthly rainfall vary from 10 mm to 250 mm.

If not Bwindi, Mgahinga is the other destination tourists visit to see Mountain Gorillas in Uganda. If Gorillas don’t appeal, this place is great for Golden monkey tracking and Batwa trail experiences.
